Anaximander in Context: New Studies in the Origins of Greek Philosophy by Dirk L. Couprie, Promoting a new, broadly interdisciplinary horizon for future studies in early Greek philosophy. Dirk L. Couprie, Robert Hahn, and Gerard Naddaf establish the cultural context in which Anaximander's thought developed and in which the origins of Greek philosophy unfolded in its earliest stages. In order to better understand Anaximander's achievement, the authors call our attention to the historical, social, political, technological, cosmological, astronomical, and observational contexts of his thought. Anaximander in Context brings to the forefront of modern debates the importance of cultural context, and the indispensability of images to clarify ancient ideologies.

Anaximander - Anaximander (Greek: Αναξίμανδρος)(610 BC/609–c. 547 BC) also known as Aniximander, was the second of the physical philosophers of Ionia, a citizen of Miletus, a companion or pupil of Thales, and teacher of Anaximenes of Miletus. Anaximander (crater) - Anaximander is a lunar crater that is located near the northwest limb of the Moon. It is joined at the northern rim by Carpenter crater, a younger and better-defined formation. Material monism - Material monism is a presocratic belief which provides an explanation of the physical world by saying that all that is, is composed of a single element. Among the material monists were Thales who believed that everything was composed of water, Anaximander believed it was apeiron, and Anaximenes believed it was air. Anaximenes of Miletus - Anaximenes (in Greek: Άναξιμένης) of Miletus (585 BC - 525 BC) was a Greek philosopher from the latter half of the 6th century, probably a younger contemporary of Anaximander, whose pupil or friend he is said to have been.
