Greek Philosopher of the Atom

The idea that matter might consist of atoms occurred to a few Greek philosophers almost 2,500 years ago, but was essentially forgotten until chemists in the late seventeenth century began to break down substances into chemical elements. This book traces the history of atomic discovery from ancient Greek theories about four basic elements to today's research into nanotechnology.

Democritus - Democritus was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher (born at Abdera in Thrace around 460 BC; died in 370 BC). Democritus was a student of Leucippus, and co-originator of the belief that all matter is made up of various imperishable indivisible elements which he called "atomos", from which we get the English word atom.
